Well it goes like this: The Fourth, the Fifth

Sometimes you just want to marry youtube.

And a few more versions, because you're such nice people. Sheryl Crow:

KD Lang:

John Cale (listen just for the lovely string quartet arrangement):

Allison Crowe:

Kate Voegele (no I don't know who she is either- but she's cute and she can sing):

Some arbit Norwegian fellows (including Kurt Nielsen- World Idol and Most Staggeringly Unexpected Voice in the Universe):

Arbit a cappella version:

Alter Bridge:

Pain of Salvation (apologies- this was the best version I could find):

The reason I have brought you all here today is that this is probably the only song in existence that can keep me in goosebumps from start to finish. And it's like it has an existence independent of whoever is singing it. Out of all the versions above, it's probably only Jeff Buckley who has really stamped his mark on the song. Even Leonard Cohen is only reciting his poem.

Also, not too many people actually want to play around with the arrangement of the song, do they? Most are just one guitar/one piano plus voice. I like to think that's respect.

It even forgives being smashed drunk when you sing it.

More proof? Here:

Fine, they can both sing. But they're nothing more than competent musicians. And you still had goosebumps throughout the song, right? Me too. Basically, they're channeling one of the greatest pieces of music ever written.

But you don't really care for music, do you?

I love Allison Crowe's version most and Leonard Cohen, too.

You're right this is such a great song that it is special in every performance.

I liked KD Lang's the best. I felt like joining that standing ovation.

Kate Voegele's is the latest version to burn up the airwaves. She's signed to MySpace Records (what an idea!) and is trying to take over the young alt-pop scene.

@Scribbler: I have this thing for collecting covers. Check out the collection at My Old Kentucky Blog: http://myoldkyhome.blogspot.com/

@Joseph: Hehe. That was deliberate. I refuse to categorise American Idol performances as legitimate covers.
